ETSU HEAD COACH ED DeCHELLIS

“We were trying to keep Virginia off balance somewhat. I thought Derrick Byars and Devin Smith really played well and shot the ball well. That was very critical. I’m very proud of our team. We fell just a little a bit short.”

“Virginia is a great basketball team. They can beat you a lot of different ways. They can beat you inside with the post guys they have and now they have some perimeter guys who can really shoot it. You have to pick your poison. We really tried to double the post and make them beat us from the perimeter, and they did it.”

“In the first half, I thought we were able to create some turnovers and get points off of those turnovers. In the second half, we just weren’t able to do it. That was unfortunate for us.”

VIRGINIA HEAD COACH PETE GILLEN

“East Tennessee did a great job. I thought they out-toughed us. They got every lose ball. They blocked our shots. They did a terrific job. We have to get tougher and be more physical. It’s my fault. I’m the head coach, and we have to do a better job with that.”

“We had to adjust to them. That’s disappointing. We like to have [opponents] adjust to our rhythm, but we had to counterpunch.”

“Timmy Smith, the [ETSU] point guard — his heart is as big as this building. If we would have lost, it would have been because of him. He’s talented and he’s tough.”

“We still a way to go yet. We have to get more cohesive. We need to get Travis [Watson] in sync. Either he’s hurt or missing practice because of academics. … Four of our top seven guys are new. Devin [Smith] still isn’t 100% coming off of knee surgery. So, we still have to learn about each other.”

“We’re not going to beat anybody badly this year. If we’re going to win, it’s probably going to be ugly.”
