Harrisonburg, Va. – Quarterback Matt Schaub was named state Player of the Year and head coach Al Groh was selected state Coach of the Year by the Virginia Sports Information Directors Association (VaSID).

Schaub, the Atlantic Coast Conference Player of the Year, headlines nine Cavaliers selected to the Divison I All-State team as selected by members of the state’s sports information directors association. Hampton, Virginia Tech and William & Mary each had four players selected, while Richmond had two. James Madison, Liberty and VMI all had one player chosen.

Virginia seniors WR Billy McMullen and LB Angelo Crowell are two of five players to repeat from a year ago. McMullen is second in ACC history with 209 receptions, while Crowell needs four tackles to break his own school record of 144 tackles last season.

Other repeat selections include William & Mary WR Rich Musinski and T Dwight Beard, and Virginia Tech FS Willie Pile. Virginia Tech TB Lee Suggs was selected to the all-state team two years ago.

Two Virginia freshmen were named to the all-state squad-LB Darryl Blackstock and TE Heath Miller. Blackstock leads the nation in sacks by a freshman (10), while Miller’s nine touchdown receptions are an ACC record for a tight end.

Other first-time selections for UVa include sophomore G Elton Brown, sophomore DE Chris Canty, senior S Jerton Evans, and senior T Mike Mullins.

Virginia faces West Virginia in the Continental Tire Bowl in Charlotte, N.C., on Dec. 28 at 11 a.m. The game is being televised nationally by ESPN2.
