Virginia Wrestling Falls To VMI in the "Rumble on the River," 27-9

RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Virginia wrestling team dropped a 27-9 decision to the Virginia Military Institute (VMI) Keydets in a non-conference dual match in the “Wrestling Rumble on the River” at Jacobs Gym in the Collegiate School. UVa took an early 3-0 lead after one bout and trailed only 9-12 with four matches remaining in the event, but the Keydets won the last four bouts to pull out a 27-9 victory over the Cavaliers.

Virginia opened up a 3-0 lead in the first bout of the event when 165-pounder Will Durkee (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shady Side Academy) defeated Mike Parsons by the score of 7-4. VMI rattled-off three consecutive wins to take a 12-3 lead before UVa responded by recording back-to-back victories in the heavyweight class and at 125 to make the score 12-9. The Cavaliers’ Josh Etu (Queensbury, N.Y./Queensbury) defeated Scott Bushman by the score of 5-4 in the heavyweight class before 125-pounder Brian Sticca (Greensburg, Pa./Greensburg Salem) defeated Juan Sanchez, also by the score of 5-4. However, the Keydets closed out the dual with four consecutive wins to post a 27-9 victory.

With the loss, Virginia’s record falls to 1-4 on the season while the win improves VMI’s record to 1-0. The Cavaliers will return to dual match action on Wednesday, January 15th when Virginia travels to Harrisonburg, Va. to face the James Madison Dukes. Competition is scheduled to begin at 7:00 PM.
