Cavalier Men's Tennis Opens 2003 Season with Win Over Hawaii
Jan. 10, 2003
HONOLULU, HAWAII – The University of Virginia men’s tennis team began the 2003 dual match season with a 5-2 win over the University of Hawaii Friday in Honolulu. The Cavaliers took two doubles matches and four singles matches to earn the victory as they completed their preseason trip to the Islands.
Virginia took control early by winning the doubles point for a 1-0 lead. The team of Chris Gonyer (Louisville, Ky.) and Darrin Cohen (Lafayette, Calif.) posted a 8-0 shutout win at No. 2 doubles and first years Nick Meythaler (Owensboro, Ky.) and Rylan Rizza (Palos Verdes, Calif.) won at No. 3 doubles to clinch the point.
The Cavaliers carried that momentum into singles where they swept the No.3 through No. 6 positions with straight sets wins. Rizza defeated Francisco Brignole at No. 3 singles, Stephen Nolen (Aurora, Colo.) downed Justin Menolascino at No. 4 singles, Cohen topped Jarrod Diepraam at No. 5 singles, and Meythaler earned a win over Anoulom Tesche at No. 6 singles.
“I thought we came out ready to play and I was pleased with our overall effort,” stated Virginia head coach Brian Boland. “We had been working on doubles a lot out here and I think it paid off today by giving us some momentum early. It is certainly nice to start the season with a win and to do it against a strong, senior led team like Hawaii is a great way to start. We had three first years playing their first collegiate dual match and they performed well today.”
Virginia returns to the mainland this weekend. Next weekend, they travel to the ACC Coaches’ Indoor Tournament in Winston-Salem, N.C. before opening their home schedule on January 25 by hosting Richmond and George Washington at the Boar’s Head Sports Club.
