WINSTON-SALEM, NC – The University of Virginia men’s tennis team opened play Friday at the ACC Indoor Championships. Seven of the conference’s teams are in attendance at the four-day event.

In play at in the 64-player singles draw, the Cavaliers had two players advance to Saturday’s round of 16. First year Doug Stewart (Malibu, Calif.), the tournament’s No. 3 seed, had a first round bye before rallying to defeat Duke’s Ryan Heinberg in three sets in the second round. Second-year Stephen Nolen (Aurora, Colo.) also advanced to the round of 16 with a pair of wins on Friday. Nolen defeated R.J. Murray of NC State in the first round before a second round upset of No. 6 seed Trent Brandon of Wake Forest in straight sets.

In doubles action, the team of Stephen Rozek (Chadron, Ohio) and Dillon Walker (Dallas, Texas) won two matches by default on Friday to advance to the quarterfinals of the 32-team draw.

The tournament runs through Monday in Winston-Salem. The Cavaliers open their home season on January 25 as they host Richmond and George Washington at the Boar’s Head Sports Club.
