MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – The University of Virginia women’s tennis team recorded its first win of the season, defeating Middle Tennessee 5-2 Sunday. The win over the Blue Raiders evens their season record at 1-1.

The No. 54 ranked Cavaliers took the early lead over the No. 62 ranked Blue Raiders as they captured the doubles point. First-years Kristen James (Centreville, Va.) and Lori Stern (Ojai, Calif.) won at No. 2 doubles and Dora and Marta Bechliwanis (Etobicoke, Ont.) won at No. 3 doubles.

Virginia would extend their lead in singles as wins by Jennifer Tuchband (Millburn, N.J.) at the No. 2 position and by James at No. 4 gave the Cavaliers a 3-2 lead. Marta Bechliwanis clinched the win for Virginia with her win at No. 6 and her sister Dora closed out the match with her win at No. 5 to make the final score 5-2.

“We had a great weekend to start the season,” stated Virginia head coach Phil Rogers. “Yesterday we came to play against a top ten team in Vanderbilt and today we played well against a team ranked below us. It was a strong way to start the season.”

The Cavaliers (1-1) visit Marshall next weekend to take on the No. 75 ranked Thundering Herd on Friday and No. 14 Kentucky on Saturday. Virginia will make their home debut on January 31 as they host Old Dominion at Boar’s Head Sports Club.
