HUNTINGTON, W.VA. – The Virginia women’s tennis team recorded its biggest upset in the program’s history by knocking off No. 14 Kentucky, 5-2 on Saturday at the Huntington Tennis Club.

Virginia improved to 3-1 overall in dual matches, while the Wildcats opened their season at 0-1.

“We had a lot of contributions from everyone,” Virginia head coach Phil Rogers said. “It wasn’t spectacular, but we showed up and played well. It was our day today. We played a solid match.”

The No. 54 Cavaliers claimed the first point over the Wildcats as they captured the doubles point. Freshman Lori Stern (Ojai, Calif.) and junior Kristen James (Clifton, Va.) won at No. 2 doubles, while sophomores Dora Bechliwanis (Etobicoke, Ont.) and Marta Bechliwanis (Etobicoke, Ont.) won at No. 3 doubles.

Senior Jennifer Tuchband (Milburn, N.J.), James, and the Bechliwanis sisters all claimed wins in singles action. James’ win at No. 4 singles over nationally ranked Natalie Roels clinched UVa’s upset victory. Tuchband, and Dora Bechliwanis each improved to a perfect 4-0 record in dual matches, while Marta Bechliwanis improved to 3-0 in dual matches.

Virginia opens its home slate by hosting Old Dominion on Friday, Jan. 31 at 5 p.m at the Boar’s Head Sports Club.
