DAVIDSON, N.C. – The University of Virginia wrestling team split a pair of non-conference dual matches against the Davidson Wildcats and The Citadel Bulldogs. Virginia defeated Davidson by the score of 36-11 before falling to The Citadel by the score of 19-17.
In UVa’s dual with Davidson, three Cavaliers came away with victories on the mat. At 133, Virginia’s Brian Sticca (Greensburg, Pa./Greensburg Salem) continued his winning ways and won his tenth consecutive match with an 8-1 victory over the Wildcats’ Ronnie Lofrese. UVa’s Bob Seidel (Wall, N.J./Wall) recorded his ninth pin this year with a fall over Davidson’s Matt Leonard at 4:51 in the 141 bout and the Cavaliers’ Conor Manley (Wilton, Conn./Wilton) picked up an 11-6 victory over the Wildcats’ Adam Sperling at 157. Virginia had four wrestlers: Tim Foley (Stafford, Va./Brooke Point), Will Durkee (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shady Side Academy), Brian Muir (Toms River, N.J./Toms River North) and Zach Freday (Akron, Ohio/Hoover), each pick up a win by forfeit. Foley was slated to compete at 165, Durkee at 174, Muir at 184 and Freday at 197. Many of UVa’s wrestlers in the dual were competing or scheduled to compete in a weight class higher than they usually compete in.
Against The Citadel, Virginia won five of the ten bouts, but came up two team points short in the team scoring in the end. UVa’s Seidel posted a 5-2 victory over the Bulldogs’ Mike Martinez at 141 and Paul Bjorlo (Reston, Va./South Lakes) recorded a 12-4 major decision victory over The Citadel’s Dan Thompson at 149. The Cavaliers’ Foley picked up his team-leading 27th victory of the year with an 11-1 major decision over the Bulldogs’ Braxton Harrison at 165, while Freday posted a 5-1 victory over The Citadel’s Jordan Everett at 197. UVa’s Josh Etu (Queensbury, N.Y/Queensbury) defeated the Bulldogs’ Billy Linane by the score of 5-3 in the heavyweight class to round of the Cavaliers’ victories.
With the split on the afternoon, Virginia’s record moves to 4-5 overall, UVa is 1-0 in the ACC. The Cavaliers are now 4-1 all-time against Davidson and 1-4 all-time against The Citadel in wrestling duals.
