CHARLOTTESVILLE – The No. 33 Virginia women’s tennis team opened their 2003 home schedule in style on Friday night, defeating Old Dominion 6-1 at the Boar’s Head Sports Club. With the win, the Cavaliers improve to 4-1 on the season, while handing the Lady Monarchs (1-1) their first loss.

The Cavaliers opened the match strong by sweeping the doubles play. Fourth-years Henriette Williams (Raleigh, N.C.) and Jennifer Tuchband (Millburn, N.J.) won at No. 1, first-years Kristen James (Clifton, Va.) and Lori Stern (Ojai, Calif.) won at No. 2, and twins Dora and Marta Bechliwanis (Etobicoke, Ont.) won at No. 3.

Virginia took that momentum into the singles play by taking five of the six matches. Three players, Tuchband and both Bechliwanis sisters lost two or fewer games en route to their win. Stern and James also won singles matches for UVa

“In both singles and doubles, we got solid play from top to bottom of our lineup,” stated Virginia head coach Phil Rogers. “If we play hard and compete as well as we can, the wins will take care of themselves.”

The Cavaliers will have a week off before returning to action. Next up is No. 51 Pennsylvania at the Boar’s Head Sports Club on February 9. Time of the match is 1:00 p.m.
