State College, PA – Virginia’s Vika Osipenko smashed the school record today, becoming the first Cavalier to clear 12 feet as she reached that height in today’s pole vault competition and finished seventh overall. Osipenko bettered the previous record by 2.5 inches. Eliese Mitchell won one event and placed fourth in another, as she took the weight throw with a toss of 59′ 7″ and threw the shot 47′ 8.5″. Andy Filachek was the first collegian across the line in the 5000m run, finishing second overall with a time of 14:31.62. Teammates Matt Ruhl and Tom Ellis were close behind, as Ruhl finished sixth in a time of 14:40.83 and Ellis took seventh with a 14:44.20

Kiamesha Otey finished third in the long jump with a leap of 5.99m and was fifth in the 200 with a 24.71. Virginia distance runners fared well, as Jane Maxwell took fourth in the 5000m run in 16:54.03 and Sharon O’Connor was fifth in the mile with a 4:51.66. Virginia assistant coach Dana Coons won the 3000m run in a time of 9:25.00.
