PHILADELPHIA – The No. 55 Virginia men’s tennis team continued their strong start to the 2003 season with a pair of wins Saturday in Philadelphia. The Cavaliers topped both the University of Pennsylvania and Saint Joseph’s University by a 7-0 score and move their record to 6-0 on the season.
The Cavaliers opened the day at Penn by downing the Quakers 7-0. After sweeping the doubles matches for a 1-0 lead, Virginia then swept the singles matches to complete the 7-0 win. Doug Stewart (Malibu, Calif.), Michael Duquette (Virginia Beach, Va.), Darrin Cohen (Lafayette, Calif.), and Stephen Rozek (Chadron, Ohio) won in straight sets for UVa while Rylan Rizza *Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif.) and Stephen Nolen (Aurora, Colo.) also won for the Cavaliers.
In the second match of the day, the Cavaliers defeated Saint Joseph’s 7-0, also played at Penn. Virginia swept the doubles matches and singles matches in the match. Stewart, Duquette, Rizza, Cohen, Rozek, and Dillon Walker (Dallas, Texas) all won in straight sets against the Hawks.
“We played very solid in both matches,” stated Virginia assistant coach Tony Bresky. “It allowed us to keep the momentum we have going and hopefully prepared us for next weekend.”
The Cavaliers return home next Friday, February 14 as they host No. 11 Minnesota at the Boar’s Head Sports Club.
