Box Score

Virginia’s Meredith Lazarus had four ground balls and two caused turnovers while three Cavaliers, including Cary Chasney, had a hat trick to help Virginia to a 16-6 victory over Temple in Philadelphia today. Lauri Kenis’ three caused turnovers led to three Virginia goals in the first half, and the Virginia defense held Temple scoreless for over forty-eight minutes in the middle of the game to race out to a 16-2 lead as Lauren Aumiller had four goals and two assists in the run and Andrea Pfeiffer made six saves to keep the Owls at bay. Chasney’s goal, which came after a drawn charge in the defensive zone, was her 100th career point (73g, 27a) and she becomes only the third Cavalier in school history to reach 100 points in her second season.

A Kenis caused turnover that was scooped up by Courtney Young started the first score for the Cavaliers as Amy Appelt rolled the crease at the other end to out Virginia up 1-0 3:40 into the game. Caitlin Banks picked up an Owl overthrow at midfield and brought the ball back upfield where she threw the ball to Aumiller, who fed Chasney in the middle of the arc. Chasney’s goal, 58 seconds after Appelt’s, put the Cavaliers up 2-0. Temple then scored a pair of goals two minutes apart to tie the game 2-2 with nine minutes gone in the game.

Kenis again caused a turnover, intercepting a pass into the Temple offensive zone and Virginia got the ball to Chasney, who ran in from the top of the arc for a goal and a lead Virginia would n ot relinquish. A Temple turnover in their own defensive zone was picked up by Appelt on the far side and Chasney fed Aumiller who was in the middle of the arc for a 4-2 lead 18 minutes into the game.

Five minutes later as Temple was working a set attack, Kenis got her stick on a feed into the arc and Lazarus picked up the ground ball and brought the ball down in transition. In the set attack, Aumiller fed a cutting Tyler Leachman, putting Virginia on top 5-2. Leachman scored just over a minute later as Appelt picked up a ball in the Cavalier offensive zone after a Temple turnover and Morgan Thalenberg fed Leachman who was streaking down the arc. Leachman was a part of the next goal as well as she took a pass from Lindsay Buchanan, who has scooped up a Tiffany Schummer caused turnover in front of the Cavalier cage, and fed Chasney who was running in from the left for a goal.

Pfeiffe r made a save on the next Temple possession and in the fast break that resulted, Aumiller fed Ashleigh Haas for a goal. Temple won the draw and worked around for a s hot but Ashley Dodson caused a turnover in front of the goal circle and Aumiller scooped up the ground ball and proceeded to take it to the cage herself for a 9-2 le ad with 55.1 seconds left in the halftime.

The second half started much like the first as a Young ground ball started the next scoring drive that led to an Appelt crease roll, putting Virginia in double digits as 10-2 three minutes into the second half. A Thalenberg draw control gave possession to Virginia, and Young drove to the cage from the top of the fan, scoring 39 seconds after Appelt.

Lazarus caused a turnover and scooped up the ground ball at the Virginia defensive restraining line. She passed the ball to Thalenberg, who fed Appelt, who raced in from the upper right of the fan to score Virginia’s 12th goal and put the Cavaliers up by ten.

Aumiller drew a charge on the Cavalier goal line and started a transition that was finished as Appelt fed Chasney on the goal circle eight minutes into the second half, helping Chasney notch her 100th point of her Virginia career, becoming only the third Hoo to reach the century mark as a second-year.

Aumiller won the ensuing draw to herself and in the set attack Banks fed Aumiller who was cutting down the arc. Aumiller scored again four minutes later as Ardith Lindsey outraced a Temple attacker for a loose ball and the Cavaliers brought the ball upfield. Chasney caused a turnover and picked up the loose ball on the side guidelines and fed Leachman, who was on the right side of the cage. Leachman flipped the ball to a wide-open Aumiller across the circle, and Aumiller scored her fourth goal of the game.

A Pfeiffer save and Dodson ground ball gave the ball back to Virginia and Chelsea Metz ran the ba ll in from the restraining line, puncutating a 14-0 run that gave the Cavaliers a 16-2 lead with 9:48 to play in the game. Temple then scored the final four goals of the game in a span of 3:54 to pull the final margin to 16-6.

Andrea Pfeiffer played the first 51 minutes and made six saves while allowing only two goals. Ginger Miles stepped in for the final nine minutes and made two saves while allowing four goals.

The Cavaliers return to action on Wednesday, April 2 as they take on JMU in Harrisonburg. Game time has been changed to 6:00 pm
