CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The University of Virginia baseball team conducted its third and final contest of the “Orange vs. Blue World Series” at Davenport Field at the UVa Baseball Stadium on Wednesday. In Game Three of the series, the Blue Team, coached by Virginia assistant coach Kevin McMullan, recorded a 12-3 decision over the Orange Team, coached by UVa assistant coach Karl Kuhn, in a nine inning contest. The Blue squad scored eight runs in the first two innings of play and never looked back as it cruised to a nine-run victory over the Orange Team. The Blue Team swept the Orange Team three games to none to claim the series title after posting a 3-0 win on Tuesday and a 3-2 victory on Monday.

In the third game, the Blue Team jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Matt Street (Purcellville, Va./Loudoun Valley) single before Mark Reynolds (Virginia Beach, Va./First Colonial) was hit by a pitch to put runners on base before they both came around to score a run following a RBI-double by Matt Dunn (Jasper, Ga./Pickens County). Dunn scored a run himself one batter later when Paul Gillispie (Danville, Va./George Washington) drove him in with a RBI-single to make it a 3-0 contest.

The Blue Team stretched its lead to 8-0 in the top of the second inning after posting five more runs in the inning. The scoring run got started when John Arseneau reached base on an error, Sean Slaughter (Virginia Beach, Va.) singled and Street walked to load up the bases with one out. Kyle Werman (Vienna, Va./James Madison) was then hit by a pitch to score Arseneau from third base to make it a 4-0 ballgame. One batter later, Reynolds connected on a bases clearing triple to drive in three runs to give his team a 7-0 lead. Reynolds eventually scored a run himself to make it a 7-0 game after a RBI-single later in the inning by Dunn to push the lead to 8-0.

The score remained 8-0 until the top of the fifth inning, when the Blue Team tacked on three more runs to pull out to an 11-0 lead. After an Arseneau single and Slaughter being hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second base, Street drilled a two-run RBI-double to plate both baserunner, making the score 10-0. Street came around to score a run himself one batter later on a RBI-single by Werman to make it an 11-0 contest.

The Blue Team put the finishing touches on its scoring run by adding a run in the top of the sixth inning to take a 12-0 lead when Gillipsie doubled before scoring a run two batters later on a RBI-double by Arseneau.

The Orange Team finally got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the ninth inning and cut the Blue Team’s lead to 12-3 when it scored three runs in the bottom half of the inning. Kye Kolar (Austin, Texas) reached base on an error to lead off the inning before back-to-back singles by Mike Mitchell (Chesapeake, Va./Great Bridge) and Tim Henry (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield). Mitchell’s single drove in Kolar to score a run from second base to make it a 12-1 ballgame. In the Orange Team’s next at-bat, Ryan Zimmerman (Virginia Beach, Va./Kellam) drove in Mitchell with a RBI-single to cut the lead to 12-2 before Henry scored a run two batters later on a RBI sacrifice fly to right field by Jordan Ghirst (Reston, Va./Herndon) to make the score 12-3. However, that would be all the scoring the Orange squad would generate as the Blue Team recorded the 12-3 victory.

Alan Zimmerer (Montoursville, Pa./Montoursville) picked up the win for the Blue Team after hurling 5.0 scoreless innings to go along with a game-high five strikeouts. Zimmerer allowed just three hits in his outing. Shooter Starr (Chevy Chase, Md./Maret School) and Greg Davis (Houston, Texas) each pitched a scoreless and hitless inning in relief in the win. Kent Krekorian took the loss for the Orange Team after being tagged with five runs on four hits in just 1.1 innings of action. Canon Hickman (Mechanicsville, Va./Atlee) was a bright spot in the Orange Team’s bullpen after he pitched 2.0 scoreless and hitless innings while striking out three batters.

With the victory, the Blue Team improves its record in the series to 3-0. The loss drops the Orange Team’s record to 0-3. The Blue Team won the three-game series, 3-0, and claimed the Orange vs. Blue World Series title.
