CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – The Virginia women’s tennis team opened play Friday at the Midwest Blast at the University of Illinois. On the first day, the Cavaliers played Notre Dame in singles and Illinois in doubles.

In singles play, Virginia won four of the seven matches against Fighting Irish. Second-year Kristen James (Clifton, Va.) posted a three-set win over Catrina Thompson. Fellow second-year Lauren Bruch (Lake Forest, Ill.) defeated Kristina Statsny in straight sets. First-year Caroline Hammond (Williamsburg, Va.) rallied for a three set win over Kelly Nelson. In the bonus singles, Dora Bechliwanis (Etobicoke, Ont.) defeated Liz Donahue in straight sets.

In doubles play, Virginia won two of three from the Fighting Illini. Mariko Fritz-Krockow (Fairfax, Va.) and Bruch defeated Emily Wang and Cynthya Goulet while Bechliwanis and Hammond topped Brianna Knue and Eva Choe.

The Midwest Blast continues Saturday in Champaign as the Cavaliers will play Miami (Fla.) in doubles and Illinois in singles.
