CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – The University of Virginia women’s tennis team concluded play at the Midwest Blast Sunday at the University of Illinois. The Cavaliers played singles against Miami and doubles against Notre Dame.

In singles, the Cavaliers and the Huuricanes split the six singles matches. Mariko Fritz-Krockow (Fairfax, Va.) led the way for UVa with her 6-1, 6-2 upset of Melissa Applebaum, the No. 48 ranked player in the nation. Kristen James (Clifton, Va.) downed Staci Stevens in straight sets, as did Marta Bechliwanis (Etobicoke, Ont.) in defeating Sara Robbins.

In doubles, the Cavaliers took two of three matches from Notre Dame. The team of James and Shannon Stough (Hot Springs, Ark.) topped Lauren Connolly and Kristina Statsny, while Caroline Hammond (Williamsburg, Va.) and Dora Bechliwanis (Etobicoke, Ont.) defeated Liz Donahue and Emily Neighbours.
