Virginia Wrestling Finishes Fifth At The 2003 Body Bar Invitational At Cornell

ITHACA, N.Y. – Fourteen members of the University of Virginia wrestling team competed in the 2003 Body Bar Invitational at Cornell University and helped the Cavaliers place fifth in the event. UVa racked up a total of 87.00 points in the final team standings. Virginia had five placewinners and was highlighted by Scott Moore who won the 141-pound weight class individual championship after going undefeated. Moore turned in a perfect 5-0 record and did it in stellar fashion, as he won all five of his matches by fall. Three of Moore’s five pins occurred at :53 second or less. Cornell, the host of the event, won the tournament by scoring 162.00 points.

Four other Virginia wrestlers also placed in the top six spots in their weight classes aside from Moore, beginning with Zach Freday. Freday went 3-1 at 184 and narrowly missed a first place finish himself as he lost a close decision in the finals and finished as the runner-up at 184-pounds to take second place. UVa’s Tim Foley and Paul Bjorlo each placed third in their respective weight classes. Foley finished 4-1 at 165-pounds and Bjorlo finished 4-1 at 157-pounds. Michael Grogan (3-2) took sixth at 174-pounds to highlight Virginia’s overall individual finishes.

Several other Cavaliers competed in the tournament and posted a victory. Andrew Leffler (2-2) picked up a pair of wins in the heavyweight class, as did Byron Dunlap (2-2) at 133. Ryan Stewart (1-2) won a bout at 125, Paul Dunstan (1-2) won a match at 157 and Drew Michelotti (1-2) posted a win at 165. Joe Carpenter (141), Makara Phor (125), Paul Bowman (149) and Scott Smith (197) also competed in the event and went 0-2 in their respective weight classes.

Virginia will return to tournament action on Saturday, November 29th when UVa travels to Lock Haven, Pa. to compete in the 2003 Mat Town Invitational. The event is scheduled to run all day.
