Virginia Men's Soccer Player Ryan Burke Named To College Soccer News 2003 All-Freshman Team

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – University of Virginia men’s soccer player Ryan Burke (Cumberland Foreside, Maine/Greely) was named to the College Soccer News 2003 All-Freshman Team as a Second Team selection. Burke, a first-year goalkeeper, was one of 33 players and the lone Cavalier to be named to one of the three College Soccer News 2003 All-Freshman Teams.
Burke started 15 of the 16 games he appeared in during the 2003 season. He recorded 1,443 minutes of playing time and posted a team-high 50 saves while turning in a 1.12 goals against average and a .735 saves percentage. Burke recorded four shutouts on the year and UVa was 7-7-2 overall with him as the keeper of record. He allowed only 18 goals on the season including just four goals in Virginia’s final six matches of the year.
Burke was named to the 2003 ACC All-Tournament Team and was selected as the ACC Tournament MVP after helping guide the Cavaliers to the ACC title. He was also named to Soccer America’s Team of the Week for Week 12. Burke allowed just one goal (a penalty kick) in three games of the ACC Tournament and made several key stops in both of Virginia’s penalty kick shootouts against Clemson (ACC Quarterfinals) and Maryland (ACC Finals) in the ACC Tournament. All four of Burke’s shutouts occurred in the postseason, with two shutouts happening in the ACC Tournament and two shutouts occurring in the NCAA Tournament. UVa finished 11-10-2 overall and 3-3-0 in the ACC.
