LOS ANGELES (AP)Elton Brown and Derrick Byars scored 21 points apiece tohelp Virginia remain unbeaten with a 76-68 victory over Loyola Marymount Fridaynight.

Virginia (7-0) is off to its best start since the 2001-2002 squad began theseason 9-0.

Brown made five of his six field goal attempts in the second half, and Byarswas 8-for-10 from the field, making four of his five shots in each half.

Virginia broke open a close game with a 17-3 run in the second half to takea 67-64 lead.

Loyola Marymount fell to 6-3, but is still off to its best start since theLions opened 8-1 in 1995-96 en route to an 18-11 season, the last year they hada winning record.

Sherman Gay led Loyola Marymount with 21 points, 15 of them in the firsthalf.

Virginia out-rebounded Loyola Marymount 48-39. Freshman guard Gary Forbespulled down 12 for the Cavaliers and Brown added 10.

Virginia scored the first nine points of the game, but the Lions led athalftime 39-35.

The game was the first ever between the two schools
