CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – University of Virginia wrestler Scott Moore (Franklin, Pa./Franklin Academy), ranked #2 in the country at 141-pounds, defeated #1 ranked Teyon Ware of Oklahoma by the score of 11-7 in double overtime in the 38th Annual National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) All-Star Classic at the UNI Dome on the campus of the University of Northern Iowa. The event was presented by the United States Marine Corps.

In his 141-pound match with Ware, Moore got on the board first and took a 2-0 lead with a takedown before Ware scored on a reversal to tie match at 2-2. Moore then scored on an escape in the second period to take a 3-2 lead before extending his lead to 5-2 with another takedown. Ware scored a point on an escape to cut the lead to 5-3 before he tied the match at 5-5. Moore then regained the lead at 6-5 with an escape and appeared to be on his way to a win in regulation, but he was whistled for a stall with just ten seconds to go and a point was awarded to Ware to tie the match at 6-6. The match would go into overtime.

After a scoreless first overtime period, Moore scored five consecutive points in the second overtime period after scoring on a reversal before locking up a cradle to take a 11-6 lead. Ware was able to score the final point of the match with an escape, but it was not enough as Moore came away with an 11-7 victory.

The results of Moore’s match against Ware will not count toward seeding for the NCAA Championships and will not be listed on either individual’s season record form. The event does not count as a competition date for the participating wrestlers.

The purpose of the NWCA All-Star Classic was to showcase the sport of wrestling by pairing the top-ranked collegiate wrestlers in a dual meet format. It is also an avenue to generate significant revenue to support important NWCA initiatives and to present the sport of wrestling’s heroes and champions to each host community throughout the country.

Moore’s record is currently a perfect 35-0 overall including a 8-0 mark in dual match action with 25 of his 35 victories wins coming by fall. He has taken first place in all six invitationals/tournaments that he has competed in this season. Moore won the Michigan State Open, Cornell’s Body Bar Invitational, the Mat Town USA Invitational, the Collegiate Beast of the East, UNC Greensboro’s Southern Scuffle and the Virginia intercollegiate State Wrestling Championships.

He has already shattered the UVa school record for most pins in a single season with his 25 falls (the former school record was 11) and is currently third all-time for most falls in a career at UVa midway through one season.

Moore was just the second wrestler ever from UVa to compete in the NWCA All-Star Classic. On February 7, 2000, Virginia’s 125-pounder Steve Garland was selected to compete in the event. Garland was UVa’s seventh and most recent All-American.
