CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The University of Virginia baseball team defeated the Central Connecticut State Blue Devils by the score of 10-0 in the second contest of a three-game, non-conference series in front of 917 spectators at Davenport Field at the UVa Baseball Stadium. Virginia posted its first shutout of the season and improved to 12-1 overall as the Cavaliers continued along on the best known start to a baseball season at UVa. The victory gave the Cavaliers the series win after Virginia posted a 17-1 victory on Friday in game one of the series. UVa’s record improves to 8-0 in games played in a three-game weekend series this season.

Virginia scored a run in the bottom of the first inning to take a 1-0 lead before essentially icing the game in the bottom of the second inning by scoring five more runs to build the lead to 6-0. Three of UVa’s five runs came off of the bat of Mark Reynolds who drilled a three-run home run to left-center field. Reynolds’ home run was his third of the season and the 27th of his career.

The Cavaliers tacked on another run in the bottom of the fourth inning to make the score 7-0 after Tim Henry tripled to right-center field before scoring a run one batter later on a RBI ground-out by Matt Street. Virginia then posted three more runs in the bottom of the eighth inning, highlighted by a pair of RBI by Paul Gillispie and Kyle Werman, to make the score 10-0.

UVa starting pitcher Matt Avery (3-0) remained perfect on the mound this season by picking up the win after tossing 6.0 innings. The RHP allowed no runs on five hits and struck out a game-high five batters. CCSU’s Lewis Pappariella (0-1) took this loss after surrendering seven runs on eight hits to go along with one strikeout.

With the victory, Virginia’s record improves to 12-1 overall. The loss drops Central Connecticut State to 1-2-1 on the season. UVa now holds a 2-0 lead in the three-game series with CCSU.

The Cavaliers and Blue Devils will return to action on Sunday, March 7th when Virginia hosts Central Connecticut State in the third and final contest of the three-game series. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 PM at Davenport Field at the UVa Baseball Stadium.
