Cavalier Women's Tennis Falls to Florida State in ACC Opener

CHARLOTTESVILLE – The No. 43 ranked Virginia women’s tennis team dropped its ACC opener Sunday, falling 6-1 to No. 53 Florida State at the Snyder Tennis Center. The loss was the Cavaliers third consecutive and drops their overall record to 9-5.

Florida State (12-4, 2-0) took an early 1-0 lead by sweeping the three doubles contests for a 1-0 lead. The Seminoles carried the momentum from doubles into singles, winning the first five matches off the court to take a commanding 6-0 lead. Virginia would win the final match of the day at No. 6, as second-year Shannon Stough (Hot Springs, Ark.) rallied for a three-set win over Amberly Tantee, 6-7, 6-4, 6-4.

“This was a tough way to start the ACC season,” said Virginia head coach Phil Rogers. “In each of the last three matches, we were capable of winning. We just need to learn to take our game to the next level so that we are winning, not just playing well.”

The Cavaliers will return to action on March 24 after a ten-day break as they host VCU.
