COTO DE CAZA, CALIF. – Virginia women’s golf finished tied for sixth at UC Irvine’s Anteater Invitational on Tuesday, marking the best tournament finish this season for the first-year program.

San Francisco led the field of 13 teams by 29 strokes to capture the team title with a 883 (+19). Brigham Young was second with a 912 (+48), while host UC Irvine was third at 919 (+55). The Cavaliers shot a 305 (+17) in the final round to finish with a 930 (+66) to tie San Jose State for sixth place overall.

Three San Francisco players finished among the top five, including medalist Kristi Larsen who fired an even 216 for the one-stroke win. Cal State Northridge’s Elizabeth Allen followed with a 217 (+1), while USF’s Nikki Jacoby finished third with a 220 (+4).

Freshman Sally Shonk (Nobelsville, Ind.) paced Virginia with a 227 (+11) to tie for 11th. She fired a 74 (+2) in the final round, the lowest round by a Cavalier during the tourney. Freshman Lindsay Robinson (Huntington, W.V.) tied for 25th with a 233 (+17), while freshman Rachel Smith (Powell, Tenn.) tied for 32nd with a 235 (+19). Freshman Leah Wigger (Louisville, Ky.) finished 41st with a 237 (+21). Freshman Ashley Mayo (Aventura, Fla.) rounded out the UVa scoring with a 243 (+27).

Virginia will participate in the Bryan Park Collegiate on April 2-4 in Greensboro, N.C.
