#25 Virginia Baseball Falls To N.C. State In Game Two Of ACC Series, 12-1

RALEIGH, N.C. – The #25 ranked University of Virginia baseball team suffered a 12-1 loss to the N.C. State Wolfpack in the second contest of a three-game Atlantic Coast Conference series at NCSU’s Doak Field. N.C. State took a 4-0 lead after one inning of play and scored eight of the remaining nine runs scored in the game to cruise to an 11-run victory. UVa’s loss ties the weekend series at one game apiece. Virginia defeated N.C. State by the score of 9-2 in game one on Friday.
N.C. State shot out to an early 4-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning after the Wolfpack scored four unearned runs in the side. After Matt Camp walked to lead off the side, Lee Mezistrano reached base on a fielder’s choice and both base runners advanced a base (to second and third) after a Cavalier error. In NCSU’s next at-bat, David Hicks drove in a run with a RBI sacrifice fly to score Camp for a 1-0 lead. Two batters later, Bryan Kinneberg connected on a RBI-single through the right side to give N.C. State a 2-0 lead before Eric Taylor belted a two-run home run over the red wall in left field to lift the Wolfpack to a 4-0 lead.
N.C. State tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the third inning to stretch its lead to 6-0. The Wolfpack made it a 5-0 game when Jason St. Julien singled, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt, and then took third base before scoring a run on a pair of wild pitches. NCSU’s scored its second run of the inning when Marc Maynor tripled to right-center field and came around to score a run on the play after another Cavalier error.
The Wolfpack made it a 7-0 ball game when St. Julien connected on a solo home run to left field in the bottom of the fifth inning. But N.C. State didn’t stop there, as NCSU tacked on five more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to take a 12-0 lead after a RBI-single by Camp before Mezistrano belted a grand slam home run to right field to clear the bases.
The Cavaliers scored their first and only run of the game and made the score 12-1 in the top of the eighth inning when Tim Henry connected on a triple to right-center field before he scored a run in UVa’s next at-bat on a ground-out by Tom Hagan.
UVa starting pitcher Matt Avery (3-1) suffered his first loss of the season after going 3.0 innings and allowed six runs (one earned) on four hit. The Cavaliers’ Josh Myers (2.0 IP, two hits, one strikeout) and Shooter Starr (1.0 IP, two strikeouts) pitched effectively to close out the game.
N.C. State starting pitcher Vern Sterry (4-1) picked up the win after tossing 7.0 scoreless innings and allowed just three hits and struck out a game-high six batters.
With the loss, Virginia’s record falls to 20-6 overall, 5-3 in the ACC. The victory improves N.C. State’s record to 16-8 overall, 2-3 in the conference. The series is now tied at one game apiece.
The Cavaliers and Wolfpack will return to action on Sunday, March 28th when UVa and N.C. State play the third and final contest of the three-game series. First pitch is scheduled for 2:00 PM at Doak Field.
