Dobies Does It Again, Leads Virginia To 8-1 Victory With Complete Game

DURHAM, N.C. – The University of Virginia baseball team recorded an 8-1 victory over the Duke Blue Devils in the first contest of a three-game Atlantic Coast Conference series at Jack Coombs Field. UVa’s starting pitcher Andrew Dobies pitched a complete game and the Cavaliers took full advantage of their 14 hits and six errors committed by the Blue Devils to post a seven-run victory. Dobies, the ACC Pitcher of the Week, tossed his second complete game in as many outings and allowed just one run in the game. He also tossed a complete game in Virginia’s 9-2 win over N.C. State last Friday (March 26th) in his last appearance on the mound.
Virginia scored the first run of the game and made it a 1-0 contest when Paul Gillispie doubled down the left field line before he scored a run in the Cavaliers’ next at-bat on a RBI-single to shallow right field that dropped in for a hit by Scott Headd. Duke evened the score in the bottom of the third inning and tied the game at 1-1 when John Berger doubled off of the left field wall and then advanced two bases to score a run after back-to-back sacrifice bunts. The later bunt, by Jonathan Anderson, plated him for a run. The run would be the only score for Duke the entire game.
The Cavaliers regained the lead for good in the top of the fourth inning and made it a 2-1 contest when Matt Dunn singled to left-center field before he scored a run three batters later on a RBI-single to left field by Kyle Werman. Virginia pushed its lead to 4-1 in the top of the seventh inning when Tim Henry singled and Matt Street reached base on a fielder’s choice before each base-runner came around to score a run on a pair of sacrifice fly balls. Henry scored a run on a sacrifice fly by Ryan Zimmerman before Street scored a run in UVa’s next at-bat on a sacrifice fly by Joe Koshansky to give the Cavaliers a three-run lead.
Virginia tacked on two more runs in the top of the eighth inning to make it a 6-1. Matt Dunn singled and scored a run on a RBI-single by Werman before Josh Darby reached base on an error before eventually scored a run from third base when Werman was caught in a rundown between first and second base.
UVa added a pair of insurance runs in the top of the ninth inning to take an 8-1 lead when Tom Hagan scored a run as a pinch runner (following a hit by Reynolds) on a RBI-double by Koshansky, before Koshansky came around to score a run himself on a RBI-single by Darby.
UVa’s Dobies (5-0) picked up the win and remained perfect on the year after going 9.0 innings. He allowed just one run on eight hits and struck out a game-high eight batters.
Duke starting pitcher Tim Layden (3-2) took the loss after going 7.0 innings. He allowed four runs (two earned) on nine hits and struck out two batters.
With the victory, Virginia’s record improves to 23-7 overall, 6-4 in the ACC. The loss drops Duke’s record to 15-15 overall, 3-4 in the conference. UVa now leads the three-game ACC series, one game to none.
The Cavaliers and Blue Devils will return to action on Saturday, April 3rd to play the second contest of the three-game ACC series. First pitch is scheduled for 12:00 noon at Duke’s Jack Coombs Field. The game will be aired on Fox Sports Net.
