Final Stats

The Virginia women’s lacrosse team scored the final four goals of the game but it was not enough as the Cavaliers (9-3) fell to Duke 10-9 today (Apr. 3) in Durham, N.C. Amy Appelt scored four goals to notch her twelfth consecutive hat trick (3 goals) while Caitlin Banks had three draw controls, two ground balls, and an assist to help pace the Cavalier effort. Virginia led in ground balls and had less fouls than the Blue Devils, but were unable to tie the game up at the end.

Duke started the game with a four-goal run in the first 14 minutes as Kristy Dirks tallied twice and Katie Chrest had three assists. Chrest dumped the ball into Dirks and then Kristen Waagbo in the arc four minutes apart to lead 2-0, and three minutes later Leigh Jester scored on a drive to the cage. Five minutes after Jester’s goal, Chrest again dumped the ball into Dirks, who scored at 14:12 to give the Blue Devils a 4-0 lead.

The Cavaliers responded as Molly Urlock drew a charge in the arc and Virginia started a transition that was completed as Morgan Thalenberg took the ball from the midfield and sprinted to the cage, scoring Virginia’s first goal 21:40 into the contest. Banks won the ensuing draw control and took the ball into the fan before dishing it off to Ashleigh Haas. Haas eluded a pair of defenders and scored 25 seconds after Thalenberg, pulling the Cavaliers within two at 4-2. Duke then scored the final two goals of the half to take a 6-2 lead into the break.

The Blue Devils scored the opening two goals of the second half as Chrest and Dirks both scored in the first 10 minutes to take an 8-2 lead. The Cavaliers answered as Courtney Young picked up an over throw just over the restraining line and took the ball into the offensive zone. She tossed the ball to Nikki Lieb, who raced in from the restraining line, eluded a defender, and rocketed a shot to the cage, putting Virginia on the board in the second half. Banks won the next draw and Virginia worked the ball around in the offense and Appelt drove to the cage where she was fouled. Appelt converted the 8-meter and thus scored in her 52nd consecutive game. Duke’s Chrest then scored off an assist by Waagbo to push the margin back to five with just over 14 minutes to play.

Pfeiffer made a save on Duke’s next possession and Lieb scooped up the ground ball. As Virginia brought the ball upfield Tyler Leachman was fouled as she went to the cage, placing her on the 8-mter. Leachman converted, pushing the margin back to four at the 47:35 mark. Another Chrest goal from Waagbo a minute later gave Duke a five-goal margin.

Pfeiffer made another save and in the transition Appelt took the ball from the top and scored with 9:51 to play, making the score 10-6. Duke got possession and tried to stall in their offensive zone, but threw the ball away and Appelt chased it down at the restraining line. She took the ball down and drew a shooting space foul, which she converted at 55:08 to pull the Cavaliers within three. Jess Wasilewski won the draw control and again Appelt was fouled on a drive to the cage. She scored off the eight, her fourth goal of the game, and pulled the Cavaliers within two at 10-8 with 3:44 to play. Duke won the draw control and were able to stall for almost the whole time, but the Cavaliers forced the ball back into the Duke defensive zone where goalie Meghan Huether committed a goal circle foul. Haas got the ball at the 12 and fed Banks, who passed the ball to Leachman, who scored just before the final whistle to make the score 10-9.

Appelt’s four goals mark the twelfth consecutive game with a hat trick and give her 54 goals on the season as well as 71 points. Her 54 goals ranks ninth all-time on the single-season charts and 71 points ranks 11th all-time at Virginia for a single-season. Banks now has 161 points and is in sole possession of eighth on the all-time points chart and with 64 assists ranks fifth. She also has 111 draw controls and ranks fifth in the career chart there.

The Cavaliers return to action on Wednesday, April as they host in-state rival Old Dominion. Game time against the Monarchs is 7:00 pm.
