DURHAM, N.C. – The University of Virginia baseball team recorded its second ACC series sweep this season after posting a 3-1 victory over the Duke Blue Devils in the third and final game of a three-game series at Jack Coombs Field. The Cavaliers’ starting pitcher Joe Koshansky allowed only one run and UVa scored three runs in the first four innings to seal the win. Virginia also defeated Duke 8-1 and 6-5 in the first two games of the series.

Virginia was the first team to score and took an early 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning after plating a pair of unearned runs. After Matt Street reached base on a Blue Devil error, he came all the way around to score the first run of the game on a RBI-double to right-center field by Ryan Zimmerman. Zimmerman scored a run himself two batters later when Matt Dunn connected with a RBI-triple to left-center field to give the Cavaliers a two-run lead.

UVa extended its lead to 3-0 in the top of the fourth inning when Scott Headd got things started with a lead-off single. He scored a run for the Cavaliers three batters later on a RBI-single by Street.

Duke finally got on the scoreboard and made it a 3-1 ball game in the bottom of the eighth inning when Javier Socorro doubled to left-center field to drive in Jonathan Anderson for the Blue Devils’ only run of the game. But it wasn’t enough as the Cavaliers claimed a two-run victory.

UVa Koshansky (5-1) picked up the victory after pitching 7.2 innings and allowed just one run on four hits to go along with his team-high five strikeouts. Casey Lambert came in to close out the game and picked up his third save of the season after tossing 1.1 inning.

Duke starting pitcher Greg Burke (3-4) pitched a complete game and went 9.0 innings. He surrendered three runs (one earned) on nine hits and struck out a game-high six batters.

With the victory, Virginia’s record improves to 25-7 overall, 8-4 in the ACC. The loss drops Duke’s record to 15-17 overall, 3-6 in the conference. UVa won the series, three games to none.

The Cavaliers will return to action on Tuesday, April 6th when UVa travels to Williamsburg, Va. to face the William & Mary Tribe in a non-conference game. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 PM.
