CLEMMONS, N.C. – The Virginia women’s golf team shot a 304 (+20) in the second round of the 2004 ACC Championship on Saturday. The Cavaliers’ two-round total of 611 (+43) puts them in sixth place.

Defending national champion and No. 1 ranked Duke widened its margin over the rest of the seven-team field by shooting a 286 (+2), good for a total of 565 (-3). Four Blue Devil players are in the top eight in the entire field. No. 20 North Carolina is second with a two-day total of 579 (+11), while No. 14 Wake Forest stands third with a 582 (+14).

Carolina’s Meaghan Francella held her one-stroke lead over Duke’s Brittany Lang, as both shot rounds of 69 (-2). Francella is at 135 (-7), while Lang is at 136 (-6). Florida State’s Katie Quinney shot the low round of the day, 67 (-4), to move into third at 139 (-3).

Freshman Leah Wigger (Louisville, Ky.) shot a 75 (+4), which gave her a two-day total of 146 (+4) and a tie for eigth place. Freshman Rachel Smith (Powell, Tenn.) shot another 75 (+4) to move into a tie for 18th at 150 (+8). Freshman Lindsay Robinson (Huntington, W.V.) shot a 77 (+6) to move into a tie for 25th at 155 (+13). Freshman Sally Shonk (Nobelsville, Ind.) bounced back with a 77 (+6), giving her a total of 162 (+20) and a spot in 33rd place. Freshman Kira Mayo (Aventura, Fla.) rounded out the scoring with an 85 (+14), leaving her in 34th place with a total of 168 (+26).

The final round of the ACC Championship tees off at 8 a.m. on Sunday, April 18 at the Salem Glen Golf & Country Club in Clemmons, N.C.
