CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The University of Virginia baseball team (36-9 overall, 14-4 in the ACC)is enjoying one of its best seasons ever in the history of the program. The Cavaliers have played a totalof 45 games so far this year, with 36 of those 45 contest resulting in a UVa victory. Of those 36 victories,14 of the wins were either recorded with a late inning comeback or by breaking a tie ball game late in thecontest. Virginia has won nine games by comeback and five more games by pulling out a tie contest ineither the eighth, ninth or extra innings. UVa has also won 10 of the 12 one-run games it has played inthis season.

Below is a game-by-game recap of events for all 14 of Virginia’s late inning comeback/pull-out victories:

Date: April 27, 2004.
Location: Charlottesville, Virginia.
Site: Davenport Field at the UVa Baseball Stadium.
Opponent: Radford Highlanders.
Scene: Virginia trails Radford by one run (2-1) in the bottom of the ninth inning with no outs,
nobody on base and batters 7, 8 and 9 due up in the order.
Score: Radford 2, Virginia 1.
Comeback Recap: Scott Headd leads off the side with a single before he advances to second
base on a bunt single by Kyle Werman to put runners on first and second with no outs.
Headd steals third base to put runners on the corners before Tim Henry drives in Headd to
tie the game at 2-2 with a RBI-ground out to shortstop. Werman advanced to second base
on the play. With one out and a runner on second base, Matt Street bloops a RBI-single to
right field to score Werman from second for the game-winning run.
Outcome: Virginia 3, Radford 2.
Type of victory: Comeback win in the bottom of the ninth inning.

Comeback Recap: Scott Headd leads off the side with a walk to reach first base.
Kyle Werman advanced Headd to second base with a sacrifice bunt, one out. Tom
Hagan drives in Headd for the game-tying run one batter later with a RBI-single to
left field to tie the score at 3-3. Hagan advances to second base on a Miami error.
Matt Street drives in Hagan to score the game-winning run with a RBI-single to give
UVa a 4-3 advantage.
Outcome: Virginia 4, Miami 3.

Comeback Recap: Joe Koshansky leads off the side with a double before being put out
at third base on a fielder’s choice that allows Matt Dunn to reach first base. With one
out and a runner on second base, Tom Hagan laces a RBI-double down the left field
line to drive in Dunn to tie the game at 1-1 to force extra innings. In the top of the
11th inning, Hagan led off the side with a single before advancing to second base on
a sacrifice bunt by Scott Headd in UVa’s next at-bat. Two batters later with two
outs, Tim Henry connected on a RBI-single to drive in Hagan for the game-winning run.
Outcome: Virginia 2, Maryland 1.

Comeback Recap: Joe Koshansky reaches base with a lead-off walk before moving to
second base on a single by Matt Dunn. Tom Hagan advances Koshansky to third and
Dunn to second with a sacrifice bunt, one out. Scott Headd strikes out, two outs. With
two outs and runners on second and third base, pinch hitter Paul Gillispie enters the
game and records an infield RBI-single to shortstop to drive in Koshansky and advances
Dunn to third base to make the score 3-2. With runners on the corners and two outs,
pinch hitter Miguel Luina drives a ball to the warning track deep in center field, where
Maryland’s CF drops the would-be game-ending fly ball (error) which allows both
Dunn (game-tying run) and Gillispie (game-winning run) to score a run to give the
Cavaliers a 4-3 lead. Luina eventually scored a run himself on a RBI-single by Matt
Street to give Virginia a 5-3 advantage.

Comeback Recap: Ryan Zimmerman keeps the inning alive for Virginia by connecting
on a two-out double. In UVa’s next at-bat, Joe Koshansky ties the game at 3-3 by
tucking a RBI-double down the right field line to score Zimmerman from third base.
In the Cavaliers’ next at-bat, Matt Dunn records the game-winning hit when his
RBI-single scores Koshansky from second base for the game-winning run to give
Virginia a 4-3 lead.

third with one out. Paul Gillispie struck out swinging, however, reached first
base on a wild pitch and Zimmerman advanced to third base and Dunn scored a run
on the play to tie the game at 9-9 with one out. Josh Darby reached base on an error
and Zimmerman and Gillispie both scored a run on the play to give the Cavaliers an 11-9 lead.

Comeback Recap: Matt Street and Mark Reynolds lead off the side with back-to-back
singles before Ryan Zimmerman drives in Street to score a run with a RBI-single to
make it a 5-4 ball game, Reynolds advanced to third base. After Joe Koshansky
reached base on a fielder’s choice and Zimmerman made his way to second (Reynolds
out on the play at third base – one out), Matt Dunn popped up to second base to put
runners on first and second base with two outs. Josh Darby then singled up the middle
to drive in Zimmerman to tie the game at 5-5 and Koshansky advanced all the way to
third base after the hit and a Duke error. Koshansky scored the game-winning run on
a wild pitch to give UVa a 6-5 lead.

Comeback Recap: Joe Koshansky ties the game at 5-5 with a solo home run to right
field. Matt Dunn and Josh Darby each single to put runners on the corners with no outs.
After a pop-up for the first out in the inning, Kyle Werman hit a RBI-single to score
the game-winning run when Dunn scored from third base to make it 6-5. UVa would
tack on two more runs in the inning and added another run in the ninth to take a 9-5 lead.

singled to left field to drive in Reynolds for the game-winning runs, giving Virginia the 4-3 lead.
