CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Virginia football is ranked No. 25 by Athlon Sports in the magazine’s preseason Top 25 College Football Countdown.

Additionally, the magazine predicts that the Cavaliers will finish fifth in the expanded ACC in 2004.

Virginia’s linebackers have been rated No. 1 in the ACC, its running backs No. 2, and its offensive line No. 2.

Junior tight end Heath Miller (Swords Creek, Va.) earned First Team All-America honors, while junior kicker Connor Hughes (Williamsburg, Va.) was named a Third Team All-American.

The magazine also honored eight Cavaliers with preseason All-ACC accolades. Joining Miller and Hughes on the First Team were senior guard Elton Brown (Hampton, Va.), senior defensive end Chris Canty (Charlotte, N.C.) and sophomore linebacker Ahmad Brooks (Newport News, Va.). Named to Athlon’s Second Team All-ACC were junior tailback Wali Lundy (Willingboro, N.J.), junior offensive lineman D’Brickashaw Ferguson (Freeport, N.Y.), and junior linebacker Darryl Blackstock (Newport News, Va.).

Linebacker Olu Hall (Fairfax, Va.) has been ranked the No. 14 incoming freshman in the ACC.

Lundy will be featured on the ACC Regional cover, which hits newsstands on June 7.

Virginia opens the 2004 season on Sept. 4 at Temple.
