Virginia’s baseball team will be cheering hard for Maryland this weekend. I know, pretty hard to believe a Cavalier would ever root for a Terp, but UM hosts Georgia Tech this weekend in the season-ending three game series for both teams. What’s at stake? An ACC regular season title. If the Yellow Jackets sweep the series, it would mean a 16-game ACC winning streak to finish the season. Pretty serious stuff, huh? If the Terps can win one game…just one…UVA will win the ACC regular season title for the first time since 1972. One other baseball note – WINA radio, AM 1070, will broadcast the ACC Tournament live from Salem, VA. Jed Williams, Robbie Marvin, and yours truly will be there to provide coverage. For fans outside of Charlottesville, visit wina.com, or virginiasports.com for an Internet audio stream. For fans going to the game, a to be determined FM frequency will be used for people sitting in the Salem Memorial stands.

Not to jinx the UVA women’s lacrosse team, but I do believe they will win the NCAA title this weekend in Princeton, New Jersey. Julie Myers‘s Cavs are very good defensively…and no one can stop Amy Appelt. The ‘Hoos get Georgetown Friday night at 8:30pm.

I guess Brian Boland, Virginia’s men’s tennis head coach, was serious when he said his team could be an NCAA contender. The Cavaliers have advanced to the round of 16 in Oklahoma this weekend, and could be the surprise team of the whole tournament.

Cavalier basketball coach Pete Gillen finally got his knee scoped, and fixed. Pete tore a meniscus sometime late last summer and waited for the season to end to get it fixed. He’s not ready for the Boston Marathon, but he is walking without a limp.

Curtis Staples, the NCAA record holder for three point baskets made and one of the great UVA players to ever step onto the floor, is putting together his annual charity golf tournament for a friend with MS. Call me at the office or e-mail me (434-982-4937 or mmcdonald@cavsports.com) if you are interested in participating and I will give you the info. The Tournament will be held Saturday, June 19th.

See you at the ballpark!
