CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The University of Virginia baseball team (42-11 overall, 18-6 in the ACC) is enjoying one of its best seasons ever in the history of the program. The Cavaliers have played a total of 53 games so far this year, with 42 of those 53 contest resulting in a UVa victory. Of those 42 victories, 17 of the wins were either recorded with a late-inning, come-from-behind victory or by breaking a tie ball game in the eighth, ninth or extra innings to claim a victory. Virginia has won 11 games in come-from-behind fashion and has won six more games by pulling out a tie contest. UVa has also won 12 of the 14 one-run games it has played in this season.

Below is a game-by-game recap of events for all 17 of Virginia’s late inning comeback victories:


Date: May 19, 2004.Location: Charlottesville, Virginia.Site: Davenport Field at the UVa Baseball Stadium.Opponent: Liberty Flames.Scene: Virginia trails Liberty by one run, 4-3, in the bottom of the eighth inning with twoouts, nobody on base and Ryan Zimmerman (#3 batter in the lineup) stepping to the plate.Score: Liberty 4, Virginia 3.Comeback Recap: Zimmerman singled to reach base and keeps the inning alive, which bringsJoe Koshansky up to the plate. Koshansky then blasts a two-run home run to right field to plateboth Zimmerman and himself, giving UVa a 5-4 lead.Outcome: Virginia 5, Liberty 4.Type of victory: Comeback win in the bottom of the eighth inning.

Date: May 15, 2004.Location: Charlottesville, Virginia.Site: Davenport Field at the UVa Baseball Stadium.Opponent: Wake Forest Demon Deacons.Scene: Virginia is tied with Wake Forest 6-6 in the bottom of the eighth inning with no outs,nobody on base and batters 6, 7 and due up in the order.Score: Wake Forest 6, Virginia 6.Comeback Recap: With the game tied 6-6 in the bottom of the eighth inning, Virginia’s TomHagan led off the side with a single before Paul Gillispie reached base on a fielder’s choice thatsafely advanced Hagan to second base to put runners on first and second with no outs. After asacrifice bunt by Kyle Werman to move Hagan to third and Gillispie to second with one out,Tim Henry drove in Hagan for the eventual game-winning run with a RBI-single through theleft side to give UVa a 7-6 advantage. In UVa’s nextat-bat, Ryan Zimmerman cleared the bases and plated three runs on a three-run, RBI-doubleto the left-center field gap. Virginia headed into the bottom of the ninth inning trailing 4-3with two outs and pinch runner Mike Mitchell on second base.
