TULSA, Okla. – Virginia’s ninth-ranked Doug Stewart (Malibu, Calif.) advanced to the second round of the NCAA Men’s Tennis Singles Championship with his first round victory on Wednesday afternoon at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center.

Stewart posted a 6-2, 6-3 mark over Oregon’s Manuel Kost. The Virginia sophomore will take on Auburn’s Gabor Zoltan Pelva on Thursday, May 27. Pelva defeated New Mexico’s Divan Coetzee, 6-4, 6-2 in first round action.

Stewart boasts a 24-8 singles mark, including 12 wins over players in the NCAA field. This is his second appearance in the NCAA singles championships as he was selected to the tournament last year as a freshman. He is the first Virginia player to receive a NCAA seed since Brian Vahaly in 2001.

The NCAA Men’s Tennis Championship continues until May 31. UVa’s 21st-ranked Nick Meythaler (Owensboro, Ky.) and Rylan Rizza (Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif.) with compete in the NCAA Doubles Draw which begins on May 27.
