CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – University of Virginia baseball player Mark Reynolds (Virginia Beach, Va./First Colonial) became the third UVa player selected in the 2004 Major League Baseball (MLB) First-Year Player Draft when he was chosen in the 16th round as the 476th pick overall by the Arizona Diamondbacks. Reynolds joins UVa’s Andrew Dobies and Joe Koshansky as one of three Cavaliers who have been selected in the first 16 rounds of the draft. Dobies was selected in the third round as the 95th pick by the Boston Red Sox and Koshansky was taken in the sixth round as the 170th pick by the Colorado Rockies.
With his selection in the draft, Reynolds became the 57th total selection and the 53rd player from UVa selected in the MLB Draft. He is also the 35th player from Virginia to be chosen in the draft over the last 16 seasons (since 1989). It marks the first time since the 2000 season that UVa three players were selected in the same draft.
In 2004, Reynolds was named a Second Team All-ACC selection. He started all 59 games he appeared in at shortstop and batted .274 with 64 hits (fourth on the team) including 11 home runs (second on the team), 11 doubles (fourth on the team) and a team-high five triples. Reynolds was second on the team with 48 RBI, scored a team-high 60 runs and racked-up 118 total bases which was the second highest total on the squad. He was successful on 18-of-22 stolen base attempts and his 18 stolen bases was the second most by any UVa player this season. Reynolds’ 60 runs scored this season tied the Virginia single season school-record for runs scored by a Cavalier.
For his career, Reynolds started 166 of the 168 games he appeared in. He recorded 181 hits including 37 doubles, 35 home runs and eight triples while posting 137 RBI and scoring 146 runs. He was successful on 29-of-36 stolen base attempts and had 639 at-bats.
Reynolds ranks in several statistical categories in at UVa for single season and career records. He stands tied for second all-time at Virginia for most home runs with 35, eighth with 137 RBI, eighth with most total bases with 339, ninth for most career runs scored with 137 and tied for ninth with eight triples. In single season records, Reynolds stands tied for first in runs scored with 60, fifth with 234 at-bats, tied for sixth with five triples, tied for ninth with 37 walks and tied for 12th with 11 home run.
