The USA National Women’s Lacrosse team held the Canadian national team to three goals on 10 shots and defeated their neighbors to the north 18-3 in the second game of a three-match test series held at C. W. Baker High School in Baldwinsville, NY. Sarah Hughes and Alex Kahoe both had two saves while Amy Appelt had three goals and two assists to lead the US in scoring. Two of Appelt’s goals came as the Americans rallied from a 2-1 deficit to take control of the game as Bonnie Rosen, Lauren Aumiller, and Quinn Carney each controlled two draws in the first 20 minutes.

After the USA’s Erin Elbe rolled the crease to give the Americans a 1-0 lead, Canada’s Linz Hart and Brittney Boynton scored goals two minutes apart to give the Canadians their first lead in the series at 2-1 six minutes into the contest. A Cherie Greer interception in the defensive arc gave the Americans control, and Kellie Thompson tied the game on a drive to the cage just over a minute after Canada’s second goal. A Kate Kaiser conversion of a free position shot gave the Americans a lead they would not relinquish.

Lauri Kenis knocked down a Canada pass in the midfield and fellow Virginia alum Kara Cooke picked up the ground ball to give the USA possession, and Crista Samaras fed Appelt to give the Americans a 4-2 lead. Appelt scored again two minutes later as she flipped an underhand shot into the cage. Thompson scored again on a free position shot to give the USA a 6-2 lead.

A Hughes save started the next scoring play for the USA as Michele DeJuliis scored off a past from Julie Shaner on a fast break after Hughes’ save. Another key defensive play, an interception by Lucy DeStefano, started the next USA score, which was netted by Kristen Sommar as she drove to the cage with just 48 seconds to play in the half.

Acacia Walker won the opening draw of the second half, and the USA capitalized immediately as Appelt dumped the ball into Carney, who scored just 37 seconds into the period. Walker then scored herself two minutes later. Carney scooped up a ground ball and in the USA offensive end, Appelt dumped the ball into former Virginia teammate Aumiller as the Americans notched their tenth consecutive goal. Another Hart goal for Canada broke the USA run, as the Ohio University grad took a feed from Jen Johnson at the 42:37 mark of the game to make the score 11-3.

Shaner picked up a loose ball in the Americans’ defensive third and at the other end of the field Samaras fed Appelt, who ripped a shot to the net to complete her first hat trick in international play. DeJullis scored on a crease roll two minutes later. Samaras notched her third assist of the game as she fed Jojo Connelly on a quickstick with just over seven minutes to play, and just over a minute later Sarah Nelson also scored a quickstick goal off a pass from Carney. Kaiser scored her second goal of the game off a pass from Cooke with 2:36 to play. A Kahoe ground ball just outside her goal circle gave the Americans possession, and Elbe finished it off with a drive to the cage. Connelly closed out the scoring with a goal with seven seconds to play in the game.

The Americans won 17 draws to Canada’s six, including four by Carney to lead all players.

The two national teams conclude the three match series on Sunday, July 11 with a game at 10:00 am.
