The Virginia Cavaliers out-shot and out-cornered the #3 Duke Blue Devils, and they held the nation’s top-scoring team to half of their normal output, including a stretch of 34:51 to open the game and the final 32:53 of the contest, but still fell to the Blue Devils 3-0 today (Oct 30) in Durham. In the final 35 minutes, Virginia had 10 shots to Duke’s five and took five short corners to Duke’s three. In addition, Duke had scored at least four goals in their last nine games except for a 3-0 win over Old Dominion, and is averaging six goals a game for the season.
The Virginia defense held strong in the first half, denying the Blue Devils on their first nine short corners of the game until Duke closed the first half with four consecutive attempts, finally scoring on the fourth one with nine seconds to play in the half.
Duke capitalized early in the second half, scoring 58 seconds into the stanza and then again 69 seconds later on a pair of goals by Katie Grant, to take a 3-0 lead. Virginia pressed the attack, and drew five short corners in the half. The Cavaliers also had 10 shots in the half, twice that of Duke, but a Cavalier shot hit the post and a defensive save by Kirsten Bostrom preserved the shutout for the Blue Devils.
Virginia will now travel to Wake Forest for the first round of the ACC tournament. Game time is 4:00 on Thursday, November 4 against the host Demon Deacons.
