STATE COLLEGE, Pa. – The nationally-ranked Virginia men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams combined to win 19 of 26 events in posting victories over Penn State Saturday (October 30) at the McCoy Natatorium. The 12th-ranked UVa men (1-0) turned in top times in 10 events in defeating the Nittany Lions 138-103, while the 20th-ranked Cavalier women (2-0, 1-0 ACC) also won nine events to post a 129-108 upset win over 12th-ranked Penn State.

The Virginia men won 10 of the 11 swimming events in recording a 138-103 win over Penn State (1-1) in its season-opener. Fourth-year Bo Greenwood (Manakin, Va./Goochland) won a pair of individual events for the Cavaliers. Greenwood finished first in both the 400 individual medley (3:56.67) and the 200 backstroke (1:49.67). Third-year Fran Crippen (Conshohocken, Pa./Germantown Academy) also had two individual event victories for Virginia in the 1000 freestyle (9:13.72) and the 500 freestyle (4:31.10).

The Virginia men won their first event of the meet, the 400 medley relay, with a time of 3:18.98. First-year Brian Stahl (Woodland, Texas/The Woodlands), second-year Vanja Rogulj (Zagreb, Croatia/Split), and fourth-years Michael Raab (Rockville, Md./Walter Johnson) and Luke Anderson (Charlottesville, Va./Bolles School) swam legs on the winning relay. Raab was also victorious in the 200 butterfly, touching in first with a time of 1:46.88. Rogulj turned in the top time in the 200 breaststroke, clocking an exhibition time of 2:01.10. First-year Ryan Hurley (Potomac, Md./Georgetown Prep) was credited with the win in the 200 breast with a time of 2:02.57. Anderson also won the 100 freestyle with a time of 44.86. First-year Matt Targett (Hawthorn, Victoria, Australia/Scotch College) won the first individual event of his collegiate career by coming in first in the 50 freestyle (20.56). Anderson, Targett, fourth-year Brian Harrington (Alexandria, Va./Mount Vernon), and fourth-year Brett Simon (San Mateo, Calif./St. Ignatius Prep) combined to turn in the top time of 3:04.58 in the 400 free relay.

Penn State’s Josh Graham won the 200 freestyle for the Nittany Lions with a time of 1:41.14, out-touching Raab by four hundredths of a second for the victory. Penn State was victorious in both of the diving events. Adam Pierce won the one-meter competition with a score of 283.95, and Marc Gastaldo won the three-meter competition with a score of 311.62.

The UVa women won nine of the 11 swimming event in registering the 129-108 upset over the Nittany Lions. Second-year Kimi Kelly (Mount Vernon, N.Y./Ursuline School) won a pair of events and also grabbed a second-place finish. She won the 1000 free (9:51.90), the 200 butterfly (2:02.66) and was runner-up in the 500 free (4:51.61). Second-year Katy Bland (Raleigh, N.C./Leesville) was also a double individual event winner for UVa as she took the top spot in the 100 free (51.06) and 200 free (1:50.03). Bland also led off UVa’s winning 400 freestyle relay that clocked a time of 3:25.59. First-years Stephanie Glover (Raleigh, N.C./Athens Drive), Amber Bialas (Virginia Beach, Va./Tallwood), and Jess Lewis (Allentown, Pa./Parkland) also swam legs on the winning relay.

Lewis won the 50 free with a time of 24.01 and was out-touched by Bland in the 100 free (51.13). Third-year Katie Gordon (Winter Park, Fla./Trinity Prep) touched in 4:21.14 in winning the 400 individual medley. Gordon was also second to third-year Brielle White (Philadelphia, Pa./Springside School) in the 200 backstroke. White posted a winning time of 2:00.11, while Gordon finished in 2:00.78. Second-year Jenny Steiner (Lawrenceville, N.J./Lawrence) rounded out the Cavaliers’ individual event winners by clocking a time of 2:18.19 in the 200 breaststroke.

Penn State’s Alison Riccobono swept the one and three-meter diving events with scores of 279.90 and 295.28, respectively. Nikki Collins won the 500 freestyle in a time of 4:51.40, just 21 hundredths of a second ahead of Kimi Kelly.

Virginia returns to action on Sunday (October 31) when it hosts Clemson at 10:00 a.m. at the UVa Aquatic and Fitness Center.
