CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams wrapped up a busy weekend with convincing victories over Atlantic Coast Conference rival Clemson Sunday (October 31) at UVa’s Aquatic and Fitness Center. The 12th-ranked Cavalier men won 10 of 13 events in registering a 132-99 win. The 20th-ranked Virginia women, fresh off an upset win over 12th-ranked Penn State Saturday, won all 11 swimming events in a 136-99 victory over the Tigers. The Cavalier men now stand at 2-0 overall and 1-0 in the ACC, while the UVa women improve to 3-0 overall and 2-0 in the ACC.

In the women’s 136-99 victory, Virginia won 11 of 13 events, including two exhibition victories late in the meet. Third-year Katie Gordon (Winter Park, Fla./Trinity Prep) won a pair of individual events as she took the top spot in the 200 individual medley (2:05.33) and the 500 freestyle (4:54.82). Gordon led top three UVa sweeps in both events. Second-year Kimi Kelly (Mount Vernon, N.Y./Ursuline School) was also a double-event winner for the Cavaliers as she won the 200 freestyle (1:52.07) and the 200 butterfly (2:04.72).

UVa opened the meet by winning the 400 medley relay with a time of 3:52.98. Third-year Brielle White (Philadelphia, Pa./Springside School), second-year Jenny Steiner (Lawrenceville, N.J./Lawrence), third-year Elaine Bennett (Richmond, Va./Douglas Freeman), and second-year Katy Bland (Raleigh, N.C./Leesville) all swam legs on the winning relay. White was also victorious in the 200 backstroke (2:04.75) as well as Bland in the 50 free (24.07). Bland was also a member of UVa’s 400 free relay that posted an exhibition win with a time of 3:29.16. First-years Stephanie Glover (Raleigh, N.C./Athens Drive) and Jess Lewis (Allentown, Pa./Parkland) and second-year Jenn Beiner (Colorado Springs, Colo./Air Academy) also swam legs on the 400 free relay. Lewis won the 100 free with a time of 51.47 and was second in the 200 free (1:52.30). Glover placed second in the 50 free (24.11) as well.

Third-year Rachael Burke (Bethesda, Md./Good Counsel) led a top three UVa sweep in the 1000 free with a time of 9:55.80 and was second in the 500 free (4:54.85), just three one-hundredths of a second behind Gordon. First-year Anna Steenrod (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Latin) posted an exhibition win in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:21.39 and was also second in the 200 I.M. (2:06.19)

The Virginia men won the first 10 swimming events in its 132-100 win over Clemson. The victory extends UVa’s ACC winning streak to 26 consecutive dual meets. Fourth-year Luke Anderson (Charlottesville, Va./Bolles School) and third-year Fran Crippen (Conshohocken, Pa./Germantown Academy) both won a pair of individual events for the Cavaliers. Anderson swept the 100 and 200 freestyles with times of 44.78 and 1:39.35, respectively. He won both events by more than two seconds. Crippen won the 200 individual medley (1:51.96) and 500 freestyle (4:29.41).

The Cavaliers opened the meet by winning the 400 medley relay with a time of 3:22.79. First-year Bryan Stahl (Woodlands, Texas/The Woodlands), second-year Vanja Rogulj (Zagreb, Croatia/Split), fourth-year Chris Cooper (Sparta, N.J./Sparta) and first-year Matt Targett (Victoria, Australia/Scotch College) all swam legs on the relay. Cooper also won the 200 butterfly (1:51.22) in a top three UVa sweep, while Targett touched in 20.70 in winning the 50 free. Second-year John Millen (Lilburn, Ga./Parkview) posted a time of 9:18.83 in winning the 1000 free, while fourth-year Bo Greenwood (Manakin, Va./Goochland) grabbed the top spot in the 200 backstroke (1:49.78). Greenwood was also second in the 200 I.M. (1:52.34). First-year Ryan Hurley (Potomac, Md./Georgetown Prep) picked up an exhibition win in the 200 breast (2:04.56).

Clemson swept the women’s and men’s diving competitions. Shastin Leathers won the women’s one and three-meter diving competitions with scores of 270.45 and 229.28, respectively, while Eric Shulick scored 301.13 points in winning the one-meter board and 273.30 points in winning the three-meter diving competition.

Virginia returns to action on November 5-6 when it travels to West Lafayette, Ind., to compete in the Boilermaker Invitational.
