The Virginia Cavaliers fell to the Demon Deacons 5-1 in the first round of the ACC Championships tonight in Winston-Salem despite an 11-save performance from Logan Carr. Virginia (10-10) held the Demon Deacons (16-2) to one goal in the first half as Carr had five saves to keep the top-ranked and fourth-seeded Wake side to the single marker. Katie Phillips hit a reverse-stick chip shot to bring the Cavaliers to within a goal in the second half, but Wake pulled away for the final score of 5-1.

The Cavaliers drew the first short corner of the contest as Phillips was fouled at the top of the circle. A save by Kristina Gagliardi kept the score level at 0-0. Minutes later the Demon Deacons drew a short and on the play, Maeke Boreel flipped the ball left to Kelly Dostal, who scored at 7:39 to put Wake on top 1-0. The Virginia defense held the score at 1-0 for the remainder of the half to send the teams to the break witih Wake ahead 1-0.

In the second half Kristi Harshman scored three minutes into the stanza to put the Demon Deacons up 2-0. The Cavaliers marched right up the field and drew a short corner. Katie Jo Gerfen’s shot was stopped by the fly, but Phillips tracked down the ball and sent a reverse stick chip shot over the head of Gagliardi to the far side of the cage to cut the Wake lead to 2-1.

Wake then scored three goals in a span of nine minutes to open up the lead to 5-1 as Haley Scott scored on a scramble in front of the cage, Lauren Crandall lifted a ball to the boards off a short corner, and Dostal hit a short-angle shot.

With the loss, the Cavaliers await the announcement of the NCAA Tournament.
