CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The #9 ranked University of Virginia men’s soccer team dropped a hard-fought 1-0 decision to the #12 ranked Maryland Terrapins in an Atlantic Coast Conference match on Senior Night at UVa’s Klockner Stadium. Maryland’s Jason Arnold scored the only goal of the match with just 4:15 remaining in regulation to lift the Terrapins to a one-goal victory. The loss was Virginia’s first of the season at home and marked the first time UVa has lost back-to-back games this year.
After both teams played a scoreless first half of soccer, the two teams turned up the intensity in the second period. Virginia and Maryland each had three shots in the first period and six shot in the second half. Following 85 minutes of play and the score knotted at 0-0, the Terrapins gained possession of the ball on the Cavaliers’ side of the field and set up a late scoring opportunity. Maryland’s Chris Lancos played a ball towards the endline to teammate Jason Garey. Garey then directed a pass into the box for a Arnold, who raced into the box and struck a one-timer past UVa goalkeeper Ryan Burke for a goal at 85:45. Arnold’s goal proved to be the game-winner.
The Cavaliers attempted a late rally, but were unable to come up with the equalizer and lost for the first time this season at Klockner Stadium. Maryland’s win over Virginia marked the first time the Terrapins defeated the Cavaliers at home since November 17, 1996.
UVa’s Burke made a team-high four saves in the loss and the Cavaliers’ Jeff Tuman made a key team save in the match to save a goal. The Terrapins’ Noah Palmer made three saves and Maryland also added one team save to prevent a goal.
With the loss, Virginia’s record falls to 14-4-0 overall, 4-3-0 in the ACC. The win improves Maryland’s record to 13-4-1 overall, 4-2-1 in the conference. UVa is now 24-32-7 all-time against the Terrapins in men’s soccer.
The Cavaliers will return to action on Wednesday, November 10th when Virginia competes in the quarterfinals of the 2004 ACC Men’s Soccer Tournament at SAS Soccer Complex in Cary, N.C. UVa’s seed, opponent and starting time for the match has yet to be determined.
