HANAHAN, S.C. – The Virginia women’s golf team reached a milestone on Tuesday, as sophomore Rachel Smith (Powell, Tenn.) claimed individual medalist honors. She shot a career-best 68 (-4) to finish at 212 (-4). This marks the first time in the program’s brief history that a player has won an individual title. Overall, the Cavaliers finished fourth in the 16-team field with an 883 (+19), beating five ACC opponents.

“It is very exciting to have Rachel finish first,” said head coach Jan Mann. “There were many strong teams and strong collegiate players, so for her to come out on top is fantastic. She’s been playing well, and I?m happy for her.”

Louisiana State came from behind to take the team title from Tennessee. Their total score of 873 (+9) beat out the Vols’ 876 (+12). Furman finished third at 881 (+17).

Tennessee’s Violeta Retamoza finished second behind Smith at 213 (-3). Cavalier sophomore Leah Wigger (Louisville, Ky.), who had a chance to tie Smith late in the round, finished with a 73 (+1) to put her in a tie for third at 214 (-2). LSU’s Vicky Meyer also finished with a 214 (-2).
