Virginia Volleyball Advances In ACC Championship

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Fourth-year middle Alexis Geocaris (Wilmette, Ill./New Trier) registered 22 kills in leading the University of Virginia volleyball team to a 3-1 (30-18, 27-30, 30-20, 30-28) victory over N.C. State in the first round of the Atlantic Coast Conference Championship Thursday evening (November 18) at Memorial Gym. With the victory, the sixth-seeded Cavaliers advance to play third-seeded Duke the quarterfinals of the ACC Championship Friday evening (November 19) at 7:30 p.m. UVa now stands at 19-10 overall, while N.C. State ends its season at 10-21. In other ACC Tournament action on Thursday, ninth-seeded Clemson defeated eighth-seeded Virginia Tech 3-2 and seventh-seeded Maryland posted a 3-1 win over 10th-seeded Wake Forest.
Geocaris hit .474 while tallying her match-best 22 kills. She also led UVa with eight block assists for a total of 26 points. First-year outside hitter Sarah Kirkwood (Tampa, Fla./Plant) added 17 kills and five block assists, while second-year outside hitter Lindsay Osco (Houston, Texas/Elkins) contributed 14 kills and five digs. Second-year setter Emily Kirkwood (Tampa, Fla./Plant) was credited with 55 assists and also tallied eight digs, three service aces and two block assists. First-year libero Melissa Caldwell (Houston, Texas/Stratford) led UVa’s defensive effort with 14 digs.
Adeola Kosoko paced N.C. State with 15 kills, nine digs and seven block assists. Stefani Eddins posted a double-double with 13 kills and 10 blocks while adding eight digs. Setter Lauren Markowski also tallied a double-double with 42 assists and 13 digs.
