Virginia Falls to Richmond, 66-57

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia women’s basketball team saw its three-game win streak halted at home with a 66-57 loss to Richmond on Saturday.
“It’s really disappointing,” said UVa head coach Debbie Ryan. “We prepared well for this game. We played a very good first half, but we didn’t come out with intensity in the second half. We had tremendous chances, but we didn’t have presence on the court.”
In the first half, the teams traded baskets until the eight-minute mark. UVa closed the stanza with a 7-2 run to enter the locker room with a seven-point lead, 25-18.
“We were so tentative (in the first half). We played scared, and I challenged them at halftime,” UR head coach Joanne Boyle said. “We finally relaxed and started attacking.”
In the second half, UVa held its edge for the first three minutes, but Richmond whittled away to take over the lead at 15:40 on a jumper by Christina Campion. The Spiders built their lead to as many as 12 points, but the Cavaliers came back. Senior LaTonya Blue (Baltimore, Md.) converted two free throws after a UR technical foul to pull Virginia within two, 54-52, but that’s as close as UVa would get. Richmond closed out the game with a 8-0 run for the win.
Senior Brandi Teamer (Joliet, Ill.) led UVa with 16 second-half points. Blue was the only other Cavalier in double-figure scoring with 15 points. Sophomore Brenna McGuire (Winchester, Mass.) finished with eight points, including two treys.
“It was a team effort, “Blue added. “It’s hard to come that close and let it slip away.”
Senior Kate Flavin paced Richmond with 18 points. Campion followed with 16 points, while DeUnna Hendrix added 14 points.
Both teams finished with 32 rebounds.
Virginia continues its three-game home stand with Liberty on Tuesday, Nov. 30 at 7 p.m.
