Virginia Beats Liberty, 67-58

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia women’s basketball team routed Liberty, 67-58, on Tuesday at University Hall.
“Obviously, we prepared well for this game,” said UVa head coach Debbie Ryan. “We still haven’t put together two solid back-to-back halves.”
In the first half, UVa jumped out to an 8-0 lead. Liberty came within one, 20-19 with 4:32 to go. The Cavaliers rebuilt their lead to eight, 31-23, at intermission, bolstered by four three-point buckets from sophomore Brenna McGuire (Winchester, Mass.).
In the second half, UVa utilized several runs to go ahead by 20 points, 62-42 with 6:33 remaining in the game. The Lady Flames cut the lead to single digits with three treys in the last minute of play.
Virginia had four players in double-digit scoring, led by McGuire’s career-high 15 points, all from long range.
“We knew Brenna had a hot hand tonight,” Ryan said. “She could have shot (the basketball) from the locker room.”
“My dad taught me how to shoot the three,” McGuire shared. “I’ve always shot the three very well. I had a good night, but I want to bring that every night.”
Senior Brandi Teamer (Joliet, Ill.) and freshman Sharnee Zoll (Marlboro, N.J.) each added 12 points. Zoll also dished out a season-high eight assists. Senior Jocelyn Logan-Friend (Cheverly, Md.) posted her first double-double of the season (second in career) with 10 points and a season-high 11 rebounds.
“Jocelyn did so many things for us that were absolutely critical,” Ryan added. “She was around every loose ball.”
Forward Rima Margeviciute was the only Liberty in double figures with 23 points, including three treys.
“We’re just not making good decisions,” Liberty head coach Carey Green said. “I believe we’re better than that. In time, we’ll prove it.”
Overall, Virginia out-rebounded Liberty, 40-37.
Virginia travels to Chicago for Northwestern’s Mildred & Roger L. White Invitational. UVa faces No. 24 Houston (5-0) on Saturday, Dec. 4 at 1 p.m. CT (2 p.m. EST) and the host Wildcats (1-3) on Sunday, Dec. 5 at 1 p.m. CT (2 p.m. EST). WINA Radio (1070 AM) will carry both games live with Jed Williams and Anna Prillaman calling the action.
