BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Virginia Tech Hokies defeated the Virginia Cavaliers 32-0 in an Atlantic Coast Conference dual match at VT’s Cassell Coliseum. Virginia Tech, competing in its first ever ACC wrestling dual, won all 10 bouts in the dual by posting eight decisions and two major decision victories over Virginia. The dual was the conference opener for both schools. The loss snapped the Cavaliers’ two-match win streak over the Hokies.

Virginia Tech began the dual off with a pair of major decision victories at 125-pounds and 133-pounds to take an 8-0 lead when VT’s Justin Staylor defeated UVa’s Anthony Burke 13-4 and Virginia Tech’s David Hoffman topped Virginia’s Byron Dunlap 20-8, respectively. The Hokies extended their lead to 14-0 when VT’s Donny Ooton posted an 8-3 decision over UVa’s Chet Naylor at 141-pounds before Virginia Tech’s Tyde Prater topped Virginia’s Paul Dunstan at 149-pounds.

VT won its fifth consecutive match when Virginia Tech’s Reed Carpenter edged Virginia’s Paul Bjorlo 7-6 at 157-pounds to stretch the lead to 17-0. The Hokies then took a 20-0 lead when VT’s Chris Stith topped UVa’s Jim Hartey 6-3 at 165-pounds. Virginia Tech extended its lead to 23-0 when the Hokies’ Shaun Guttridge edged past the Cavaliers’ Damian Johnson 3-2 at 174-pounds.

Virginia Tech’s Steve Borja then posted a 3-0 decision over Virginia’s Kyle Narkiewicz at 184-pounds to give the Hokies a 26-0 lead. In the next bout, the Hokies took a 29-0 lead when VT’s Tomas Ovalle defeated UVa’s Scott Smith 6-2 at 197-pounds. Virginia Tech put the finishing touches on a shutout win and claimed its tenth consecutive bout when the Hokies’ Mike Faust defeated the Cavaliers’ Nick Smith 3-2 at heavyweight to give Virginia Tech a 32-0 victory.

With the loss, Virginia’s record falls to 2-2 overall, 0-1 in the ACC. The win improves Virginia Tech’s record to 7-1 overall, 1-0 in the conference. UVa is now 30-33-1 all-time against VT in wrestling.

The Cavaliers will return to action on December 29-30 when select members of the team compete in the Midlands Invitational (Evanston, Ill. at Northwestern University) and at UNC Greensboro’s Southern Scuffle (Greensboro, N.C. at UNCG).
