Dec. 11, 2004
Virginia field hockey players Mia Link, Katie Phillips, and Katie Jo Gerfen were all honored by the Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID) with their inclusion on the All-State team, as announced by the organization today. This is Gerfen’s second such designation while it is the first for both Link and Phillips.
Link led Virginia with 15 goals and five assists for 35 points, including a 10-point outburst against Bucknell in the opening game of the year. Link’s four goals and two assists are the second-highest point total for a single game in Virginia hockey history. She added a hat trick against Longwood, becoming only the tenth person in Virginia history to record two or more hat tricks in a season. She also finished the year ranked sixth all-time in points as a second year and fifth in goals scored as a second year. Link was featured in the September 20, 2004 edition of Sports Illustrated’s “Faces in the Crowd” section. Link also earned All-ACC honors in 2004.
Phillips also had an offensive explosion in 2004, ranking second on the team in scoring with 14 goals and two assists. She scored in nine games, including against four in-state opponents. Phillips was the primary stroker for the Cavaliers, going 5-for-6. Her offensive production this season was more than her career totals to date and had four game-winning goals, including against #10 Boston College and Longwood and VCU. Phillips notched a hat trick against VCU, the second of her career.
Gerfen anchored the Cavalier defense this year, earning post-season honors for the third time in her career. She started every game for the Cavaliers in 2004, just as she has done in her previous three years. She concluded her career with 16 goals and 17 assists, earning All-South Regional honors in her last three years. Gerfen was named an All-American by both the NFHCA and womensfieldhockey.com in 2003.
