CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) – North Carolina ended five years of frustrationat Virginia on Saturday, blowing out the Cavaliers from the opening tip on theway to a 110-76 victory.

Jawad Williams scored 23 points on 8-for-10 shooting, Sean May had 20 andRaymond Felton 16 for the No. 3 Tar Heels (17-2, 6-1 Atlantic CoastConference), who won for only the fourth time in the teams’ last 11 meetings.North Carolina hadn’t won in Charlottesville since Feb. 20, 1999.

North Carolina led 62-26 at halftime, hit triple digits on the scoreboardwith 4 minutes left and went 14-of-23 from 3-point range. They also shot 60percent for the game and outrebounded the Cavaliers 45-26.

J.R Reynolds led Virginia (10-8, 1-7) with 18 points.

The Tar Heels led 16-8 when they started a 26-3 run with 14:20 to play inthe first half. The Cavaliers were 1-of-10 with seven turnovers during the8{-minute spurt, which ended with the Tar Heels ahead 42-11.

When Melvin Scott made a 25-footer 4 seconds before halftime, North Carolinatook 62-26 lead into the break. The Tar Heels made eight 3-pointers in thehalf, while the Cavaliers managed only seven total field goals in 28 attempts.

The Tar Heels also outrebounded Virginia 21-11, shot almost 66 percent andgot no points in the half from Rashad McCants, their leading scorer, who playedjust eight minutes because of foul trouble.

When North Carolina started the second half by scoring the first six points,fans in the capacity crowd starting heading for the doors.

Midway through the second half, Tar Heels coach Roy Williams emptied hisbench, and Virginia’s Pete Gillen followed a few minutes later.
