Virginia Hosts #9/6 North Carolina on Monday at University Hall

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The University of Virginia women’s basketball team returns home to University Hall on Monday, Feb. 7 for a showdown with No. 9/6 North Carolina. Tip-off on the Regional Sports Network is set for 7 p.m. [Comcast Sports Net will broadcast the game on tape delay to air at 1:30 a.m.]
Then the Cavaliers host ACC newcomer Miami on Thursday, Feb. 10 at 7 p.m. WINA Radio (1070 AM) will broadcast all games live with Jed Williams calling the action and Myron Ripley on color commentary.
Under the guidance of head coach Debbie Ryan, Virginia stands 16-6 overall and 5-3 in ACC play. Senior Brandi Teamer leads the Cavaliers with 13.0 points per game while shooting 51 percent from the field. Senior LaTonya Blue follows with 12.6 ppg. Senior Jocelyn Logan-Friend adds 9.6 ppg and a team-best 6.5 rpg. Sophomore Brenna McGuire is fourth with 8.1 ppg and a team-best 50 treys. In ACC games only, Blue is the team’s leader with 17.6 ppg and 9.7 rpg. UVa out-scores its opponents by +11.1 points and out-rebounds foes by +6.7 boards.
The No. 9/6 Tar Heels, under the guidance of 19th-year head coach Sylvia Hatchell, stand 17-3 overall and 5-2 in the ACC after a 55-41 win at Georgia Tech on Jan. 30. Sophomore Ivory Latta paces the team with 15.7 ppg, while freshman Erlana Larkins adds 15.0 ppg. Sophomore Camille Little adds 11.6 ppg, and senior Nikita Bell contributes 10.3 ppg. UNC leads the nation with 14.5 steals per game. North Carolina hosts Clemson on Feb. 4 before traveling to Charlottesville. North Carolina holds a 35-31 series advantage over Virginia since the teams first met in 1976. Last season, the Tar Heels swept three games from UVa, a 75-70 decision in Charlottesville, a 70-64 win in Chapel Hill, and a 64-45 win at the ACC Tournament.
The Hurricanes, under the guidance of 17th-year head coach Ferne Labati, stand 10-11 overall and 2-6 in the ACC after falling at No. 3/4 Duke, 72-63 on Feb. 3. Junior Tamara James is the team leader with 22.1 ppg and a team-best 6.9 rpg, while senior Yolanda McCormick follows with 12.3 ppg. Miami hosts Virginia Tech on Feb. 6 prior to visiting Charlottesville for the first time.
Virginia won the only contest its played with Miami, 78-69 on Dec. 28. 1987, at the Orange Bowl Classic in Miami, Fla.
