CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The University of Virginia wrestling team battled closely against North Carolina State but lost the Atlantic Coast Conference dual match at home, 21-9. In front of an enthusiastic crowd that cheered the Cavaliers on, UVa wrestlers kept the score close for most of the match until the Wolfpack pulled away for the 12-point win.

The Wolfpack gained an early 3-0 lead as Virginia’s Anthony Burke dropped a 10-5 bout at 125-pounds to N.C. State’s Garrett Cummings. UVa’s Byron Dunlap tied the team score at 3-3 with his 5-0 win over Matt Spengler at 133-pounds. NCSU’s Jeff Breese’s 13-12 win over UVa’s Aaron Martin at 141-pounds extended N.C. State’s lead to 6-3.

The Cavaliers battled back to tie the score at 6-6 with Paul Dunstan’s 4-1 win over N.C. State’s Alex Hernandez at 149-pounds. N.C. State’s Kody Hamrah then gave his team a 9-6 lead with an 8-3 win over UVa’s Paul Bjorlo at 157-pounds. The Wolfpack extended their lead to 12-6 after Rick Brownlee recorded an 18-13 overtime win over UVa’s Conor Manley at 165-pounds.

N.C. State’s Kevin Gabrielson widened the Wolfpack lead to 15-6 after a 12-6 defeat of UVa’s Rocco Caponi at 174-pounds. The Cavaliers battled back to bring the gap to 15-9 in the 184-pound contest as Virginia’s Kyle Narkiewicz battled to win a 3-2 bout over N. C. State’s Jeremy Colbert.

While the Cavaliers looked to mount a comeback, N.C. State’s Zach Garren stopped Virginia’s Scott Smith with an 8-2 victory at 197-pounds to maintain the Wolfpack’s advantage. NCSU’s Jainor Palma took a 2-1 win in the heavyweight match against Virginia’s Nick Smith to give N.C. State the overall victory and make the final score 21-9.

With the loss, Virginia’s record falls to 4-10 overall, 0-3 in the ACC. The victory improves N.C. State’s record to 6-6 overall, 2-0 in the conference.

Virginia will return to dual match action on Friday, February 18th when the Cavaliers host the Duke Blue Devils in UVa’s final home contest of the season. The ACC dual match is scheduled to start at 7:00 PM and will be held at UVa’s Memorial Gymnasium.
