NORFOLK, Va. – The University of Virginia baseball team (ranked #33 by the NCBWA) jumped out to an early 6-1 lead through an inning and a half of play, but eventually fell to the host Old Dominion Monarchs by the score of 9-6 in a non-conference game at ODU’s Bud Metheny Baseball Complex. The Cavaliers received a strong pitching performance by first-year starter Pat McAnaney and had five players post multiple-hit games, highlighted by Josh Darby’s (3-for-4, 2 RBI, 1 run) and Sean Doolittle (2-for-5, 4 RBI, 1 run), but the Monarchs scored the last eight consecutive runs of the game to post the three-run victory over the Cavaliers.

Virginia got on the scoreboard early and often and took an early 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning. After a two-out walk by UVa’s Ryan Zimmerman 2-for-3, 2 runs), the Cavaliers’ Darby drove in Zimmerman for the first run of the contest on a RBI-double through the right side to make it 1-0. In Virginia’s next at-bat, the Cavaliers’ Doolittle connected on a two-run home run to put UVa ahead 3-0. Doolittle’s home run was his team-leading second of the year in as many games.

After ODU plated a run in the bottom of the first inning to cut Virginia’s lead to 3-1, the Cavaliers answered right back with another three-run side, this time in the top of the second inning, to claim a five-run advantage at 6-1. With the bases loaded, Virginia’s Darby was hit by a pitch to score Kyle Werman (1-4, 1 run), who reached base on a single. One batter later, Doolittle drove in two more of his game-high four RBIs with a two-run single to score Matt Street (1 run) and Zimmerman.

However, Old Dominion scored the last eight runs of the game to seal the contest. The Monarchs plated one run in the bottom of the second inning before adding four more runs to tie the game at 6-6 in the bottom of the sixth inning with a four-run side. In the bottom of the seventh inning, ODU scored three runs to break open the 6-6 tie and held on for the eventual 9-6 victory.

UVa’s McAnaney made his first career start and went 5.0 strong innings and allowed two runs on six hits and stuck out two batters in a no-decision. The Cavaliers’ Ryan Ouellette (0-1) took the loss after allowing three runs (one earned) on four hits in 1.1 innings of action. Old Dominion’s James Burok (2-0) picked up the win after going 2.2 scoreless innings in relief.

With the loss, Virginia’s record falls to 2-2 on the season. Old Dominion improves to 3-2 with the win. The two teams will face each other again next week (February 23rd) in Charlottesville, Va.

The Cavaliers will now return to home action when they kick off a seven-game homestand from February 18-27, beginning with a three-game home-opening series against the Bucknell Bison on February 18-20. Virginia is scheduled to face Bucknell on Friday, February 18th at 3:00 PM, Saturday, February 19th at 4:00 PM and Sunday, February 20th at 1:00 PM.
