Virginia’s McGavock Dunbar took the lead with 200 meters to go in the finals of the 800m run and held on to win his second ACC title today in Chapel Hill with a 1:52.18, helping the Cavaliers take fourth place as a team in the ACC Indoor Track and Field Championships. The fourth-place finish ties the 2005 team with the highest finish in school history, which they last achieved in 1991.

The Cavaliers had three men finish just off the medal stand as Kellen Blassingame, Jordan Orr, and Soeren Lindner all took fourth in today’s meet. Blassingame finished fourth in the 400m dash, while Orr finished just .87 seconds behind Dunbar in the 800 and took fourth. Lindner led a 4-7-9 finish in the mile, coming in just 2 seconds behind the champion. Alex Tatu, who had one of the top times in the conference coming into the meet, battled through illness just to reach the finals, where he scored for UVa with a seventh-place finish, just ahead of teammate Kevin McHale.

Ryan Foster, who placed eighth in the 5K the night before, also took eighth in the 3K, running a personal-best 8:25.41. Walt Kingsbery took tenth after winning the first heat of the 5K in an 8:27.23, fighting off some late challenges to take the tape.

David Sullivan, who took home the silver in the pole vault yesterday, scored in the high jump today with a leap of 2.03m (6′ 8″), just .75″ off his personal best. Sullivan took sixth place, as did teammate Kathryn Pettine for the women. Pettine jumped 3.60m (11′ 9.75″), tying her personal-best mark. Pettine just missed 12′ 3.5″ as she just nicked the bar which bounced once, landed back on, and then bounced off. The illness-ravaged women finished 11th overall with 11 points.
